Education Domain – What does it mean

Many technology companies and start-ups want to join the fast growing  education industry.  Every day new technology start-ups are launching claiming to be part of education domain. What does it mean to be part of education domain, who are the key players, what are they building, developing or providing.  As a part of my study of education domain I will be writing several posts on this topic. I hope you find it useful. I am primarily covering technology companies building IT products or providing services in this field, I am not planning to cover

MOOCs are courses open to everyone for free. Most of the MOOC courses are designed and delivered by University professors. Only difference between a MOOC and a university course that you don’t get any credit awarded for these course. Some of the most popular of these online courses are

The internet is my religion

In it, Jim Gilliam gives us a short tour of his life’s story. I encourage you to watch the entire mind-blowing twelve minutes. In it, Jim tells the story of how after contracting life-threatening cancer, he went from following a popular movement—Jerry Falwell-branded fundamentalist Christianity—to creating two of his own. First, following the tragedy of September 11, 2001, Jim became an activist for a better America and produced a series of compelling documentary films to further his cause. In order to promote these films, Jim developed a series of techniques using the Internet to basically create a movement—i.e. to organize a group of people to do something. In this case, learn from his films and strive to improve the country. Later, we find that the cancer treatment that Jim received earlier in the story burned out his lungs requiring that he receive a double lung transplant or die. Finding a donor for two healthy lungs and a doctor willing to perform the insanely risky surgery is the mother of all long shots, so Jim had to start a new movement to get new lungs. Organizing people to save his own life profoundly impacted Jim’s view of how he should spend the rest of it. So much so that his personal domain is called 3dna.us to represent the 3 different DNAs that combine to keep him alive, a constant reminder that he cannot do it alone.

How Successful People Think

1. Focus ithe biggest challenge. Figure out where you need to focus your energy. Devote maximum time to most important activity, even though it might be boring.
2. Don’t be surrounded by people who always say what you want to listen. Listen to the colleague you dislike most or someone who opposes you. Once you have gone through all the opposition you will be more confident about your decision.
3. Having great ideas is not enough. It is just the beginning. Follow through and ensure that Ideas are executed as well.
4. Let ideas, thoughts develop in your mind before you try to get everyone excited about it. Shape your ideas, thoughts and think about clear messaging before you communicate the same.
5. Leaders hire people who are smarter in areas where they are weak. They don’t feel threatened by people who are smarter than them.
6. Plan ahead, think strategically and long term but leave room for spontaneity.
7. Be prepared to change the way you think.
